Region 22 Awards $2000 Scholarships to Two First-year College Students
Two of the Region’s Black Belts were awarded a $2000 scholarship at the Region 22 Fall Dan Test, held on September 12th at the Richland High School in Johnstown, PA.
Scholarship Winner Kiran Judd is a Cho Dan from A Mountain Wind Martial Arts, in State College, PA.
Mr. Judd is a first-year student at Penn State, and is working toward a degree in the College of Engineering. He has been a member of the WTSDA since 2002.
Reflecting on his training in his scholarship application essay, Mr. Judd wrote,
“Tang Soo Do has taught me life skills and other personal lessons. One of the most significant skills I have acquired is to work toward a long-term goal and not quit when things get difficult.”
In her scholarship application essay, Scholarship Winner Victoria Homschek, E Dan from River Valley Tang Soo Do Academy in Ambridge, PA, elaborated on the benefits of her Tang Soo Do training.
“What many people don’t understand is that Tang Soo Do doesn’t just teach you how to protect yourself. It teaches you discipline, respect, self-control, confidence, leadership, perseverance and so much more. I suppose you can say that Tang Soo Do has been my rock, my foundation. It is always something that I will have with me; something I can fall back on if I find myself is a rough situation.”
Ms. Homschek has been a member of the WTSDA since 2000, and is a first-year student at Slippery Rock University. She is working toward a degree in Dance and Elementary/Early Childhood education.
